I’ll tell you who, no one. Yep, I truly don’t believe there’s anyone out there who doesn’t love a good, warm, chewy chocolate chip cookie. So that’s why I’m about to share with you all my absolute favorite recipe that has been so kindly given to me by my sister-in-law, whose family has had it in their recipe box for a few generations.
For those of you who would like a gluten/dairy free and vegan option, I’ve provided the alternative ingredients below!
I’ve searched for years prior to her giving this recipe to me since I was a kid-yes, I was that 6 year old baker who loved baking and cooking. My passions began early.
Here is the actually recipe she handwritten for me over 10 years ago. I will forever this recipe and this recipe card for as long as I live. I’m thinking about framing it-what do you think?
First off, let’s talk about what makes the absolute perfect chocolate chip cookie. Now I realize these qualities are very subjective, but these are what makes my cookie eating experience wonderful for me.
chewy and crispy. They must be both! The outsides of the cookie should be crisp and firm, so when you pick them up they don’t crumble and provide a firmness when you bite into them. The center is were it absolutely must be chewy-not crisp, not too doughy, but just right. This combination alone sends me into pure bliss within seconds. I’m a texture girl…
Golden color. We eat with our eyes, first and foremost. If you see a chocolate chip cookie white in color, you can bet it’s going to taste too doughy, or too floury. In addition, if you come across a flat and brown chocolate chip cookie you’re going to assume it’s going to taste burnt-which it probably is. The color must come from the tender caramelization of the brown sugar, butter, and egg that develops not too slow but not too quick in the oven.
Size. Give me a reasonably sized cookie and I’m a happy girl! I have an appetite, and I’m never satisfied with a Nabisco half-dollar sized chocolate chip cookie. #sorrynotsorry. I love for my cookies to be substantial, and where I can eat 2 and be happy. The size of a DVD is slightly too large, but I’m thinking just a little bit smaller than that and you’ve got a good sized cookie on your hands.
Old Fashioned Chocolate Chip Cookies
These warm and chewy dark chocolate-stuffed old fashioned chocolate chip cookies will be sure to comfort you with the smell of caramelizing brown sugar and vanilla perfuming your kitchen. Settle in for a delicious trip down memory lane.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a larger mixing bowl, cream together the sugar, egg, butter, and vanilla on medium speed until a light golden and fluffy texture appears.
Slowly add the flour mixture on low speed, just until almost all the flour is incorporated. You don't want to overmix-this will result in a tough cookie!
Add in the chocolate chips, and fold just until combined.
Drop large spoonfuls onto the baking sheet, or roll a golfball-sized piece of dough in your hands for a more round and smooth cookie. Make sure they have about 2 inches of space around each so they can spread and bake properly.
Bake for 8-12 minutes, depending on your desire for chewiness or crispiness, and the size of your cookie. I bake mine for about 9 minutes and pull them out when the middles of the cookie are puffed. They will fall after you pull them out, and this is what creates the chewiness I'm after.
